The first step in the Career Puppy Career Exploration Experience is determining what you like to do, what your interests are.
To discover these things, you will take the Strong Interest Inventory Assessment, a tool used by thousands of people who were looking for help in choosing fulfilling careers based on their interests and where they find meaning and motivation.
For years, the researchers behind the Strong Interest Inventory have been following the data, interviewing people years later to see how accurate the assessment is and how satisfied people are with their career choices.
The Strong Interest Inventory® assessment is used to help you understand your work interests and to show you some kinds of careers where you might feel fulfilled and comfortable, “a good fit”.
This is not a test where you are given a high or low score; there are no right or wrong answers. It’s an assessment, simply a way to evaluate and measure your interests.
The Strong Interest Inventory Assessment will help you discover your interests and will organize them into “Themes”. Knowing your personal “Themes” will help you explore career paths.
We recommend taking the Strong Assessment on a tablet, laptop or computer. It is difficult to navigate through all the questions on your phone.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During the assessment, you will consider 5 sections of occupations, subject areas, activities, and personal characteristics to which you will be asked to choose a ranking. Don’t overthink your responses; stick with your first choice or impression.
Section I: OCCUPATIONS
For each occupation listed, you will indicate how you would feel about doing that kind of work.
Do not worry about whether you would be good at the job or about not being trained for it. Forget about how much money you could make or whether you could get ahead.
Think only about whether you would like to do the work in that job.
• Click Strongly Like if you think you would definitely like that kind of work.
• Click Like if you think you would probably like that kind of work.
• Click Indifferent if you think you are indifferent to doing that kind of work (that is, you wouldn’t care one way or another).
• Click Dislike if you think you would probably dislike that kind of work.
• Click Strongly Dislike if you think you would definitely dislike that kind of work.
If you don’t know anything about the career mentioned, you can ask someone to describe it to you and then choose - or just choose “Indifferent”
Section II: SUBJECT AREAS
As you did for the occupations, indicate how interested you are in each subject area listed.
You may be interested (or uninterested) in a subject area even if you have not studied it.
Select the first response that comes to mind.
Section III: ACTIVITIES
As you did for the occupations and subject areas, indicate how interested you are in each activity listed. Select the first response that comes to mind.
Section IV: LEISURE ACTIVITIES
As you did for the occupations, subject areas, and activities, indicate how interested you are in spending your leisure time in each leisure activity listed. Do not think over various possibilities. Go with your first response that comes to mind.
Section V: PEOPLE
Most of us choose jobs in which we can work with people we enjoy. Indicate how you would feel about having day-to-day contact with the types of people listed.
Do not think about specific examples. Again, choose the first response that comes to mind.
Section VI: YOUR CHARACTERISTICS
This section helps describe what kind of person you are. It’s important to be honest about your weak points as well as your strong points because they are equally important in choosing a career. Please select one response for each item.
• Click Strongly Like Me if the statement definitely describes you.
• Click Like Me if the statement probably describes you.
• Click Don’t Know if you cannot decide.
• Click Unlike Me if the statement probably does not describe you.
• Click Strongly Unlike Me if the statement definitely does not describe you.
Throughout the Assessment, select one response for each item. Do not spend too much time thinking about each.
